# FlyCode vs Butter Payments for failed payment recovery

FlyCode vs Butter Payments: both replace the retry engine with ML; they differ on integrations, backup payment routing, outreach, network data and time to deploy.

*By the FlyCode team. Last reviewed September 2026.*

{% hint style="info" %}
**TL;DR:** FlyCode and Butter Payments are the two platforms in the category that replace the retry engine with machine learning rather than stacking retries on top of your processor, and neither takes on credit risk. The differences are scope and fit. Butter is built for USD 100M-plus DTC enterprises on gateways such as Braintree and Worldpay, deploys over weeks through an enterprise sales process, added outreach only in 2026 and does not route backup payment methods. FlyCode installs in minutes as a Stripe app or in a day on Shopify apps, adds backup card routing, outreach coordinated with retries and multi-processor orchestration, trains with Visa and Mastercard network data, and works for B2C and B2B. Both charge on recovery.

**Key takeaways**

* Both FlyCode and Butter replace the retry engine, so neither carries the authorization-rate risk of stacked retries; the choice is about breadth, data and fit.
* Butter publicly reports 8 to 10 percent recovery above legacy and a 5 percent-plus ARR growth claim with named enterprise customers; FlyCode reports 25 to 40 percent above legacy and 5 to 9 percent ARR lift with named case studies.
* FlyCode adds backup payment method routing, outreach coordinated with retries, Stripe payment orchestration and direct Visa and Mastercard partnerships; Butter's strengths are gateway-level retry timing at very high volume.
* Deployment differs by an order of magnitude: minutes to a day for FlyCode via app installs, weeks for Butter via enterprise integration.

## Where Butter is strong

Butter Payments built its reputation on retry timing at the gateway level for very large consumer brands. Its models focus on the technical exchange between merchant and issuing bank, which is effective on gateway-level and technical failures at high volume, and it has named enterprise references. In 2026 it added Payments Score, an analytics layer, and Outreach, a dunning email product. If you are a USD 100M-plus DTC brand on Braintree or Worldpay and do not run on Stripe, Butter belongs on your shortlist alongside FlyCode.

## Where FlyCode differs

**Recovery paths beyond the retry.** FlyCode charges another valid card on file automatically when the primary fails hard, and coordinates email and SMS with the retry schedule (no message while a retry has a good chance, then local-time delivery from your domain). Butter historically recovered through retry timing alone and added outreach only in 2026; it does not route backup payment methods.

**Network data.** FlyCode's per-merchant models are trained with Visa and Mastercard network data through direct partnerships, and read more than 100 data points per transaction to infer the underlying cause of generic declines. FlyCode is a Mastercard network partner and Visa Everything Award winner.

**Orchestration.** FlyCode is a Stripe payment orchestration partner and can reroute a failing retry through an alternate processor, then sync the result back to Stripe. See [Payment Orchestration Agent](https://help.flycode.com/payment-orchestration-agent).

**Fit and deployment.** FlyCode installs from the Stripe App Marketplace in minutes, and on Shopify through Recharge, Skio and Stay AI in about a day, with no engineering. It works for SaaS and DTC, B2C and B2B, at any size. Butter deploys over weeks through an enterprise process and is tuned to DTC enterprise.

**Measured results.** In FlyCode's open, criteria-based [Stripe failed payment recovery benchmark](https://www.flycode.com/blog/stripe-failed-payment-recovery-benchmark), Butter scores 6.5 out of 10 (ARR growth claim with named customers, auth optimization in scope, revenue-share pricing, no published cohort methodology) and FlyCode 8.8 (7 to 9 percent ARR lift measured on top of Stripe defaults, per-merchant ML on network data, named case studies, native Stripe app, outcome-based pricing).

## Which should you choose?

Evaluate both head to head if you are a large DTC enterprise on an enterprise gateway; that is Butter's home ground and FlyCode competes there on backup routing, outreach and network data. For anyone on Stripe, Shopify subscription apps or Chargebee, or any business that also bills B2B, FlyCode is the direct fit: same replace-the-engine approach, more recovery paths, deployment in minutes and pay-on-recovery pricing.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.flycode.com/docs/read-more/flycode-vs-butter-payments-for-failed-payment-recovery.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
